Spider-Man 3, written and directed by Sam Raimi, who has directed some of the top rated movies, has screenplay by Ivan Raimi and Alvin Sargent. Based on the fictional comic character made famous by Marvel Comics, makers of many top 10 movies, this is the third movie in the series, starring Tobey Maguire, as the superhero Spiderman with Kirsten Dunst, essaying the role of his lady love Mary Jane Watson and his arch enemy, Harry Osborn portrayed by James Franco; all these being the stars of many top movies.
A meteorite crashes on the earth and a symbiote from it sticks to Peter's moped. Flint Marko whose bullet had killed Peter's uncle Ben Parker comes in contact with particle accelerator and the surrounding sand fuses with his body giving him power to alter his body shape at his will. Harry Osborn who believes Peter was responsible for his father's death seeks revenge by attacking Peter with weapons developed using technology of Green Goblin. An injury during the fight with Peter, Harry has partial amnesia and he forgets who Peter is.
While Spiderman is asleep, the symbiote sticks to his costume turning him into an anti-thesis of Spiderman. This Spiderman wearing a black suite is more powerful, selfish and arrogant. Under the influence of the black suite, Peter brutally attacks Eddie, a photographer at Daily Bugle, where Peter also works. On learning that Marko was his uncle's killer, he finds him and dissolves his sandman body in water.
Peter has started realizing the bad effects of the black suite. To rid himself of it, he goes to the isolated bell tower and with the help of loud ringing of the bell is successful in getting rid of the black suit. Unfortunately for Eddie, who is also in the church, the suite engulfs him. Reincarnated as Venom, Eddie finds sandman and both kidnap Mary.
Later when he recovers from amnesia and learns from his butler the truth of his father's death, Harry joins hands with Peter to fight the duo of Venom and sandman. In the battle that ensues, Venom is killed and Marko seeks forgiveness from Peter telling him he had no intention of killing his uncle. Peter forgives him and Marko floats away. Harry has been critically injured and before he dies share the truth of his father's death with Peter they forgive each other.
Technical excellence was more accomplished in this movie. Sam Raimi controlled the screenplay more tautly and CGI content was above par. Danny Elfman was not keen on doing the score for this sequel (he had done both the earlier movies) due to some differences with Sam Raimi. But producer Grant Curtis was able to convince him to collaborate with Christopher Young and they have done a great thing on the music.
As Harry, James Franco has made tremendous improvement. Tobey Maguire, as usual, is perfect to the last 'T' and Mary Jane was subdued as the script demanded and Kirsten Dunst did full justice to the role. Definitely worth seeing, especially for those diehard fan of Spiderman.
No doubt, it has the distinction of being Marvel Studios most successful movie till now. For its distributors, Sony Pictures, who have distributed some of the top movies, this has been their biggest grosser so far.
